Andrew and Paul learned about God and Jesus in different churches and realize their views of spirituality are worlds apart.
Andrew was raised Catholic and was told his homosexuality was a sin. For his entire life, he hid the truth. He married and had children to present a facade to the world that of a straight man. It's not until he has an affair with Paul, who shows him a different side of Jesus, that Andrew realizes he can be gay and still believe in God. Paul's Jesus is one of acceptance and love, and in Paul's church, being gay is not a problem.
For Paul and Andrew, falling in love is the easy part of their journey. They must make it through the fires of cheating, being discovered, Andrew's wife leaving, the necessities of childcare and family life, the demands of their jobs, and working on their commitment to each other. Only then can they be safe in each other's heart.

I really enjoyed this story! I shouldn't be as surprised as I am, but I was really worried after reading the more negative reviews. The cheating aspect (even though it's through a mutual agreement that's been negotiated before they even got married) might be an issue for some, but it didn't really bother me.
The Catholic Church was not that demonized in the book. Religion was a factor in why Andrew didn't come out to his parents, but he wasn't abused by the church. It's only society's and family's expectations and stigma that held back Andrew from living as a proud gay man. It really is a minor plot thread in the overall story (in my opinion). Heck, it even shows that families who are heavily into following Catholic doctrine are willing to open their hearts.
Minor spoilers, I think.
Andrew's confusion on how Paul's church is understandable. When you've only experienced something done a specific way, there is a minor culture shock when you realize that not everyone does it 'that way'. Such as holy water at the entrance to a church and such.
End minor Spoilers.
The core of this book is acceptance and the struggle of society's expectations balanced off of your own desires. It's in Kristy's move to balance her own desires and her family. It's in Andrew's realization that the world is more malleable than he realized. It's in Paul finding himself up to a challenge he never thought he'd have to face so quickly. This story is insta-lust in some ways, but a slow burn to a long lasting love. I was really surprised at some of the twists and turns that are taken by this story.
Renae Kaye walks a fine line in this book, balancing the drama and the sweet moments that make me smile. I highly recommend!

Safe in His Heart (Audible Audio Edition) Renae Kaye Randy Fuller Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews
I appreciated what the author attempted to do here. She presents us with a cheating husband - not a norm for this genre - and tries to introduce some important themes around religion, love, and the places we come from. I thought the love story was beautifully done. Those of us who read this genre don't like MCs like Andrew, who cheat, who lie to themselves and others, etc. But he seemed more real for all that. I applaud the author for presenting this kind of MC.
My main problem with this book is the portrayal of the Catholic Church. Perhaps the Church is different in Australia. I live in New York, in the United States, and for the first part of my life went to church every single Sunday. I never heard a sermon that said being gay is a sin. I never heard sexuality discussed by anyone. I never heard a sermon that put divorced people down. I have never head a sermon that talked about hellfire or sin. I have only ever heard sermons of peace, love and doing service for others. In fact, the churches in my area welcome gay people and march in our local LBGTQ parade! Now, I disagree with the Church's stance on the role of women. And I am horrified by the way the Church handled the abuse that was perpetuated by priests. It rocked my faith. But the main message of this book was offensive to me, and didn't align at all with my personal experience. Perhaps the author had a different experience of Catholicism. If she has been a Catholic, I can accept the things she wrote - she wrote from experience. It is different from mine, but I appreciate that others have had different experiences. However, if she is not, or never has been, Catholic, I find this story reprehensible.
Even without my personal reaction to the depiction of Catholicism, I think the author handled the issue of religion with a heavy hand. It seemed like she was trying to be deep, but the insertion of religion was jarring. The first half of the book didn't show, in any way, that the MCs were religious. We didn't see a scene of Paul going to services until the last third of the book, and though there were mentions of Andrew's conservative Catholic upbringing, there was never any evidence that brought that to life for the reader. People can stay in the closet for any number of reasons. Without more exposition about Andrew's upbringing, or scenes showing interactions with his family early in the book, the "conservative Catholic" angle seemed tacked on - a crutch for a lack of set up and background building.
And don't even get me started on Kristy, or the depictions of other women in the book. Every woman was either subservient to men (Erica/every women who worked for Cabott mining) or hankering after a man and marriage (Nadia), or a complete b*tch (Kristy). Again, maybe my reaction has to do with cultural differences and I should reserve judgement, but why in the world was Erica relegated to a PA whose every action was only meant to serve a man (Andrew)? Erica comes off as brilliant, strategic and a strong executor - she should be a VP at Cabott Mining, not catering to every whim or need of Andrew's. Nadia was an amusing sidekick who only cared about having a baby and who, at the age of 30, was bemoaning her life and despairing of never having a family. Really? She's 30 -10 good years left to have a baby, if that's all she really care about in life. And Kristy - don't even get me started. She's weak, gets lectured at by her cheating husband, is a loving mother one minute and a fiend the next - she didn't seem real and only seemed to exist to make us like Andrew even a little bit.
I could take any one of those female characters on their own and think "of course, there's all kinds that make the world," there's a bad apple in every bunch, etc, but the fact that every female character was totally dependent on men to give her life meaning was intolerable.
It's too bad. I really liked Paul and Andrew together. Their interactions, and the way they interacted with Lilah and "Germy" were wonderfully drawn. But there was an undercurrent of misogyny and religious prejudice underpinning this book that was disturbing.
Renae is one of those authors I clicked with from the first book. Once again, I picked up this book and hit the ground running. At first, it may seem like the book is going to be more on the sexual side, but even though it has portions of that, it's so lovely seeing the characters develop and story unfold. It was truly a delightful read and I think as a gay man and growing up with religion, I identified with many parts of this and especially as I've evolved with those beliefs, as I got older.
All the Yes! Enjoyable read, perfect amount of angst and "what will happen?" I've wanted this story since we first met in Safe in your Arms. Renae writes Aussie books that contain real Aussie blokes. Ones we know, ones we meet at the shops and ones we want to know.
