What if the Central Powers, Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire had been victorious in the First World War, originally known as The Great War?

The Second Great War - North Africa is a novel that speculates how the Second World War could have unfolded had the Central Powers not been defeated.

From the arid wastes of North Africa, to the dark seas of the Mediterranean, and elsewhere, this alternative history novel follows an army officer and a nurse as they are swept up in the events of this Second Great War.

The Second Great War North Africa eBook Alex Night

As an alternative history book this one was fairly decent in its originality but has editing and storyline issues. To this book's credit it has a lot of action throughout its chapters, some is nonsensical to absurd, some not so bad. There are issues with weapon timelines and applications that are odd to the point of being slapstick humor. What you have is a very campy piece of war fiction devoid of sex high in violence and written in the syntax of war noir of the representative period. At 99cent's it was very fairly priced and I've no regrets of the money or time investment in reading it. I believe a good editor and a bit of rewriting could turn this into an excellent book but as it is this is on the level of being better than fair

The Second Great War North Africa eBook Alex Night Reviews

This is a fast paced story that has action, suspense, tragedy and romance. However, you have to be a fan of historical "What ifs" to appreciate the story as there has been 30 years of revisions affecting our beloved earth starting, from this book's point of view in the outcome of the First World War. In its' view the allies in that war were not as successful in that war's ending and the central European powers were not devastated.

This leads us to a new Second World War which unfolds quite differently from that of the one we are familiar with although the main theatre of operations for this book is focused on North Africa. The characters of the book are quite believable and the flashbacks in developing them are interesting. There is a definite streak of villany in the players of the Central powers but there is a reasonable description of how this came about.

The descriptions of carrying out war in the hot, dessicated, deserts of North Africa give a "nice" feel for the difficulties people had just surviving the environment in addition to the problems of dealing with their enemies. There are also descriptions of military equipment that actually did not exist in the Second World War that are interesting.

So if you are a fan of alternate history, like a fast paced read with interesting characters and suppositions this tale may be for you. I liked it. Oh! And the price was right too.
The second Great War is OK, especially for the $0.99 price. I'll admit that I stopped reading it a couple of times, but came back a week or two later. I finally finished it on the third go and only gave it one read.

The scenario is the Central Powers (Germany, Austria & Turkey) won the Great War (WW I). War breaks out again in 1939 between the same countries, Germany, Austria & Turkey on one side and Britain & Italy on the other. The Americans are dragged into the war due to the sinking of a US Ship.

Th overall plot line of the story follows the romance of an American Army nurse and an American infantry captain. It all ends well, if you were wondering.

At the beginning of each chapter there is a long italicized section that is a flashback to World War I. This section tends to be about fathers or relatives of the present characters, or perhaps the same character who is a young man in the earlier war. Maybe I'm slow, but I didn't get what these sections added to the story.

The book doesn't flow well or hold together. The characters are well done, but the story is choppy-at least it seemed that way to me. It didn't reach our and grab be like some other authors' books do. It's not bad, but I'm not waiting for the second installment.
"The Second Great War-North Africa" imagines a world where Germany and her pals won WW I. The action takes place in North Africa in the years later second round of Great War. All this is good stuff. What lacks is good character development. We are treated to carnage, fighting and bloody battle. Unfortunately, we are not engaged with the characters.
In the modern world with anyone able to submit his work to the attention of the public we get mixed results. The basic idea is sound and has interest. The depiction of the fighting is strong and vivid. We do have characters inhabiting the tale but they are sketched too slightly for my taste.
Alex Night shows good potential and my well bring us the kind of alternative history novel that will capture the time and dollars of a wider audience. We will see.
I have given this book a five star rating but with reservations. The first 2/3rds of the book is a solid five star rating. Good descriptions, characterizations and, although an alternate history story, a very believable story line and a hard book to put down. Then it suddenly becomes very James Bondish and out of the realm of reality. For instance, I can't really accept that a nurse with only recreational flying experience on single engine biplanes would suddenly be able to steal and fly a four engine heavy bomber. However, since by this time a good deal of empathy for the characters and main plot interest has arisen, I will leave it at five stars.

It is an alternate history but it is not over much so. In the Second Great War circa 1939-1940s, the British and Americans have Italy as an ally but France, who lost the First Great War in 1915 - 1919, is neutral. The story concerns this Entente fighting the Three Powers, Germany, Austria and Turkey, in North Africa. The fighting, tactics and weapons used are very similar to those of WWII. The alternate history mode gives the author a free hand without being handcuffed by historic fact.

The novel is interspersed with alternate history creations, President Wilkie's address to Congress, a letter to Klara Hitler informing her of her son, Adolph's, death in the (First) Great War, etc. which add a bit of fun. One also gets a breather from the main story line with biographies of some of the main characters. These chapters themselves make very interesting reading.

I am not a fan of long drawn out fight scenes in novels. Often I will simply skip over them. But, the battle scenes in this novel held my rapt interest. I really did find it hard to put this book down once I started reading.
